2016 President's Farewell Message

It was an honor and a privilege to serve as your HSTE President for 2016. The year flew by with many exciting HSTE events and opportunities!

My goal as your 2016 President was to increase membership participation by creating more opportunities for networking and professional development. We did so by kicking off our first HSTE to ISTE video contest and received two amazing video submissions by Hawaii educators and their students. To help support our growing contingent of Hawaii educators traveling to the ISTE conference in the summer, we held an "ISTE Survival Training" meet & greet. And while at the ISTE conference, we had a hugely successful meet & greet with our partner, ASTE (Alaska society), that brought together more than 60 educators and administrators from Hawaii and Alaska!

What I believe was our most successful event was the Makey Makey Workshop for Educators in November that connected 3 of our islands simultaneously via Google Hangout to learn how to effectively integrate the Makey Makey device into the classroom. The networking, the learning, and the project building were amazing! Check out the photo album for this event here! We definitely want to create more events like this for our members in 2017!

And lastly, we had another successful Schools of the Future Conference, with our HSTE bookstore and our Meet & Greet Social / All-Member Meeting at the end of Day 1. Many of these events through the year would not be possible without our generous sponsors. Mahalo to all of them through the year for supporting HSTE and our members!

But these events would also not be possible without the hard work and dedication of our entire HSTE Board. It was such a pleasure working with all of them in 2016 and I'm excited to continue working with them in 2017. With Melissa now serving as President of HSTE for 2017, our returning Board, and our newest Board members, I know our organization is in the best hands to propel our efforts and our work forward and to continue providing quality opportunities for all of you!

Mahalo to the Board and to all our members for a great 2016! I'm looking forward to what's ahead in 2017!

Sincerely,

Michael Fricano II
