Brett Tanaka, HSTE President (2013) - Farewell Message

Happy New Year HSTE Members!

I hope you all had a great holiday break and had some quality time to re-charge for the new year. As I look back on past year, it seems to have gone by in a blink but I feel confident that HSTE is definitely a step or two higher than when I first started the year as President.

Last year was only the 2nd year of HSTE as an official ISTE Affiliate organization. Since the organization is in its “growing” stages, it took me some time to explore, understand and strategize how to move HSTE to next level. As mentioned in my previous article, it wasn’t until I attended the ISTE Conference for the first time that I clearly saw the potential and direction to take HSTE. Since returning with this “vision”, the HSTE Board and I have been working hard on a developing “strategic plan” to more clearly define the direction and operations for HSTE. The efforts involves clarifying “gaps” in our HSTE Bylaws that governs the organization as well as operational procedures/guidelines. In addition, we are working on the expanding key “strategic” areas that will help the organization grow:

  • Expand HSTE committees needed to support strategic projects (e.g. SOTF Conference, Hawaii Educational Leadership Summit, Special Interest Groups (SIGs), HSTE Communication, Professional Development, etc.)

  • HSTE Neighbor Island Teams for statewide representation and involvement

  • HSTE Financial Plan & Funding Strategies to help cover the organization’s operational and project costs.

  • HSTE Meet & Greet events for networking and collaboration opportunities

At this point, there is still lots to be done and it will be a “work in progress” that will take more time than my term as HSTE President will enable me to see through. However, I am confident the “strategic plan” efforts will help provide more clarity and continuity for the organization  in the long term regardless of the HSTE Board personnel changes. Although my Presidential term has ended, I will still be actively involved as “Past President” and will continue to work with the new incoming Executive Board Team whom I have full confidence in carrying the “torch” for these efforts forward. Please congratulate and welcome our new 2014 HSTE Executive Team:

  • President - Mike Travis

  • Vice-President - Elizabeth Garrison

  • Secretary - Michael Fricano II

  • Treasurer - Megan Cummings

Thank you all for the opportunity and experience serving as the HSTE President. The experience that I gained has given me a completely different perspective on how we as a community of educational technology leaders can help support our students, fellow colleagues and schools. I am looking forward to seeing the possibilities of our HSTE community growing beyond our shores to the Pacific Rim areas and beyond!

Mahalo Nui Loa,

Brett Tanaka

HSTE Past President
